Trompe-l'oeil uses painted perspective to make a flat wall read as a corridor, a window or a landscape beyond. The illusion depends on an agreed viewing position, so we plan the geometry around where people actually stand.
Commissioned work in 3d trompe-l'œil wall normally runs from 6 to 50 m², with 4–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 150–600 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Wall Painting & Murals capability, alongside 12 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When 3d trompe-l'œil wall is the right answer - and when it is not
Trompe-l'oeil is chosen when a flat wall needs to open into something it is not - a corridor, a window, a landscape beyond. It is the right answer for interiors where people occupy a predictable position, such as a dining room, a lift lobby or a themed queue line. It is the wrong answer for a space people cross from every angle, because a painted illusion is built for one viewing zone and collapses outside it.
How the work is actually carried out
The illusion is drawn from a surveyed position, not from imagination: we record the eye height and the typical viewing distance, then construct the geometry so the vanishing point lands where the architecture wants it. The wall is prepared flat, because any bow in the surface fights the perspective. Painting proceeds from the vanishing point outward in glazes so corrections are possible, and the finish is matt, since any sheen reflects the room and breaks the trick.

3D trompe-l'œil wall is not one product at one size: the table below is the same scope ladder we quote on, so you can see where your project sits before asking for a price.
| Build tier | Typical area | Production days | What changes at this tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 8–60 m² | 4–8 | Up to 60 m², one substrate and one access setup, 4–8 days in the workshop. |
| Tier 2 | 5–50 m² | 3–8 | 5–50 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 3 | 5–40 m² | 3–6 | 5–40 m² across two or more faces, 3–6 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 4 | 10–80 m² | 5–10 | 10–80 m² across two or more faces, 5–10 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 5 | 5–40 m² | 4–8 | 5–40 m² across two or more faces, 4–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |

Faults we see most often in 3d trompe-l'œil wall
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Designing the illusion before agreeing where people actually stand - perspective chosen for the wrong position never reads correctly.
- Using a satin or gloss protective coat, which turns the wall into a mirror of the window and kills the depth.
- Ignoring the lighting design; strong directional light from one side flattens painted depth no matter how well it is drawn.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Primary viewing zone | Mark on a plan where people will stand, sit or queue. One zone is enough; two competing zones need two illusions or a compromise. |
|---|---|
| Lighting design | Send the lighting plan or describe the fittings. Direction and gloss decide whether the illusion works at all. |
| Adjacent architecture | Photographs of the surrounding walls, floor and ceiling let us continue the real geometry into the painted one so the join is invisible. |
