French-style work is dense, symmetrical and built up from many small elements. We produce rosettes, panel mouldings, cartouches and full wall schemes, keeping the ornament in proportion to the room rather than scaling a single design up.
Commissioned work in french-style plasterwork normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 3–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 500–1600 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Gypsum Relief & Decorative Plaster capability, alongside 7 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When french-style plasterwork is the right answer - and when it is not
French-style moulding is chosen when the ornament should be crisp, light and highly detailed - the fine acanthus work, delicate brackets and shallow relief that French classical interiors are built on. It suits interiors that are meant to feel refined rather than heavy, and where the mouldings are seen close enough for the detail to register. It is the wrong answer in a room where the ornament will only ever be glimpsed, because the cost is in the detail nobody sees.
How the work is actually carried out
Patterns are matched to the period or the design intent, and where an existing original survives we take a rubber mould from it directly rather than redrawing it. Castings are made in small sections so fine undercuts release cleanly, then assembled with the joints placed where the ornament naturally breaks. Fixing is done with fine adhesive and pinning, and the final surface is finished to receive paint, gilding or limewash without losing the crispness that justified the material.

Faults we see most often in french-style plasterwork
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Substituting a cheaper profile that is close to the original, which is visible immediately to anyone who knows the period.
- Assembling with joints through the middle of a leaf or bracket instead of on a natural break.
- Over-sanding before painting, which rounds off exactly the fine edges the profile was chosen for.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Original or reference | If original work survives, we take a cast on site. Otherwise send photographs and the period, and we match from the pattern library. |
|---|---|
| Ceiling height and scale | French detail is sized in proportion to the room. Share the dimensions and we will set the scale rather than guess. |
| Finish schedule | Paint, gilding and limewash each need a different preparation. Confirm the intent before casting so the surface is right. |
