GRG is gypsum reinforced with glass fibre, which makes it far stronger than plain plaster and allows large, thin, curved sections. It is what we use when a shape has to wrap a column, bend around a corner or span an opening.

Commissioned work in grg shaped relief normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 3–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 500–1600 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Gypsum Relief & Decorative Plaster capability, alongside 7 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.

When grg shaped relief is the right answer - and when it is not

Glassfibre-reinforced gypsum gives complex, curved and large-scale interior form with the surface quality of plaster. It is chosen where the shape is beyond what conventional casting can achieve - flowing ceilings, organically curved walls, deep reveals - and where weight matters because the structure is already set. It is not a cheap material, so it makes sense on feature elements rather than as a bulk wall finish.

How the work is actually carried out

The form is modelled digitally, then a CNC-cut mould is produced so the curvature is accurate rather than approximated. Gypsum slurry is sprayed or laid up over glassfibre reinforcement to a controlled thickness, which gives the strength without the mass of solid plaster. Panels are cast, dried and trial-assembled in the workshop before shipping, so site work is assembly rather than fabrication. Joints are designed on a grid that follows the geometry, which is what makes the finished surface look seamless.

Build tiers for grg shaped relief

GRG shaped relief is not one product at one size: the table below is the same scope ladder we quote on, so you can see where your project sits before asking for a price.

What we deliver

  • Section drawings and 1:1 detail confirmation before mould-making
  • Moulds, casting, curing and finishing in our own workshop
  • Cornices, columns, arches, wall panelling, ceiling domes and coves
  • Gilding, ageing and painted finishes matched to your scheme

Faults we see most often in grg shaped relief

Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.

  • Designing curves that look elegant in a render but cannot be built or transported in real panel sizes.
  • Leaving the joint layout to site, which produces visible seams running across the most prominent part of the form.
  • Skipping the trial assembly, so a dimension mismatch is discovered on the scaffold instead of in the workshop.

What to settle before an overseas project starts

Digital model or dimensionsA 3D model is ideal. Without one, send a measured survey plus the intended geometry and we will build the model for approval.
Structural capacityGRG is lighter than solid plaster but not weightless. Confirm the ceiling or wall's capacity and the fixing method available.
Services coordinationLighting, sprinklers, detectors and air terminals all need fixing points inside the form. Coordinate before casting, not after.

Common questions

Do you need a 3D model to start?
It helps enormously. Simple geometry can come from drawings, but curved and free-form shapes are modelled first so the client approves the exact form before mould-making.
Can GRG be installed on an existing ceiling?
Usually yes. Because GRG is light it often hangs from the existing structure without reinforcement; loads and fixing points are confirmed at survey.
Is gypsum relief suitable for bathrooms or exteriors?
No. Plain gypsum absorbs moisture. For damp or outdoor conditions we specify GRC (glass-fibre reinforced cement) instead, which is covered under our cement relief range.
