Artificial rockwork is reinforced cement shaped to look like natural stone, which makes it possible to route pipework, hide pumps and control weight - none of which is easy with real rock. It is standard for themed and landscape water features.

Commissioned work in water-feature & rockery cement forms normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 3–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 600–1800 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Cement Relief & GRC capability, alongside 7 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.

When water-feature & rockery cement forms is the right answer - and when it is not

Water features and artificial rockwork are chosen where a landscape needs a vertical or contrasting element that planting alone cannot provide - courtyard water walls, themed rock formations, pool surrounds, garden features. They suit hospitality, residential landscape and themed environments. They are a poor fit where there is no maintenance regime, because water features inevitably need cleaning, chemical balance and pump servicing. The lifetime cost is the part clients underestimate: the construction is paid once, but the pump, the seals, the water treatment and the cleaning recur for as long as the feature runs, and a feature designed without that in mind is switched off within two years.

How the work is actually carried out

The feature is designed with the water circuit, pump access and drainage resolved before the surface is built, because retrofitting a pump chamber means demolishing the work. The structure is formed, then surfaced with the stone or rock texture being referenced, with colour layered for depth rather than flattened. Water is tested on the finished surface before sign-off, since flow patterns change as the surface wets and cures. Edges are detailed so splash and drift land where they can drain rather than where they stain. The water is treated as a system rather than an effect: filtration, circulation turnover and treatment are sized to the volume and the exposure, and every serviceable component is placed where it can be reached without breaking the finished surface.

What we deliver

  • Site-sculpted work and precast panels, chosen per project
  • Rebar, mesh fixing and multi-layer build-up for durability
  • Stone-look, bronze-effect and rust-effect finishes
  • Water-repellent sealer as standard on exterior work

Faults we see most often in water-feature & rockery cement forms

Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.

  • Building the surface before the pump access is resolved, so the chamber has to be cut in afterwards.
  • Filling with untreated water and leaving it, which stains the rock surface and is difficult to reverse.
  • Ignoring splash and wind drift, which streaks adjacent surfaces and saturates the planting on one side.

What to settle before an overseas project starts

Water circuit and accessConfirm the pump position, power supply and how it will be serviced. Access must be designed in from the beginning.
Water quality and maintenanceTell us who maintains it and with what. Water treatment decisions are made at design stage, not after the first algae bloom.
Reference rock or stoneSend photographs of the formation or stone you want, plus the scale relative to people. Both matter for the texture and the massing.

Common questions

Does artificial rockwork look artificial?
Bad rockwork does. Texture is taken from real stone samples and the colour is built up in stains rather than painted flat, which is what removes the giveaway uniformity.
How is the water made safe and clean?
Circulation, filtration and water treatment are designed with the mechanical engineer, and access hatches are built in so the pump can be serviced without breaking the rock.
Will cement relief crack?
Movement is managed with control joints and mesh reinforcement, and we seal exterior surfaces. Hairline cracks can still appear on very long runs — a repair-and-recoat regime is included in the warranty.
