Abstract work is carried entirely by form and surface, with no subject to hide behind. That makes the material, the finish and the lighting design central to the commission rather than secondary decisions.
Commissioned work in abstract sculpture normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 3–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 0+ per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Sculpture Fabrication capability, alongside 13 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When abstract sculpture is the right answer - and when it is not
Abstract sculpture is chosen when a space needs form, scale and movement rather than narrative - a piece that reads differently as people walk around it and that holds a plaza, atrium or landscape without depicting anything. It depends entirely on proportion, material and siting, which is why it should be designed for the specific place. It does not travel well: a piece designed for one site usually looks displaced in another.
How the work is actually carried out
The design starts from the site - the approach, the sightlines, the scale of the surrounding architecture and the light - rather than from a form chosen in isolation. A maquette is produced and reviewed in place where possible, because proportion that reads well on a desk can look timid at full size. The material and the finish are selected to support the form: mirror to dissolve it, brushed metal to articulate it, stone to give it weight. Engineering is integrated from the beginning, particularly for large or wind-exposed pieces.

Reference price bands for Abstract sculpture
Indicative only, based on the scope normally quoted for abstract sculpture. A firm price follows a site survey and an itemised quotation split into material, labour, finishing, packing and freight.
| Pricing basis | Priced per piece or per project rather than per square metre |

| Reference range | CNY 0+ per m² |
| How we quote | Itemised: material, labour, finishing, packing and freight shown as separate lines |
Build tiers for abstract sculpture
Abstract sculpture is not one product at one size: the table below is the same scope ladder we quote on, so you can see where your project sits before asking for a price.
| Build tier | Typical area | Production days | What changes at this tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | Up to 30 m², one substrate and one access setup, 3–8 days in the workshop. |
| Tier 2 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 3 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 4 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 5 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 6 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 3–8 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 7 | 6–30 m² | 3–8 | 6 m² and above, multiple substrate types and phased access, 3–8 days with a join and numbering plan. |
What we deliver
- Concept sketches and a scaled maquette for sign-off
- Structural calculation and internal armature where required
- Fabrication, welding, surface finishing and protective coating
- Delivery, on-site assembly and foundation coordination
Faults we see most often in abstract sculpture
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Buying or reusing a form designed for another site, which rarely sits correctly in a new one.
- Judging proportion from a maquette photographed in a workshop; view it on site or against a scale reference.
- Leaving wind and structural engineering until after the form is fixed, which forces visible compromises into the design.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Site and approach | Send plans, photographs and the direction people approach from. An abstract piece is a response to its place, so this is the brief. |
|---|---|
| Scale reference | Tell us the height of the surrounding architecture and the distance from which the piece will be seen. Scale follows from those, not from preference. |
| Engineering | For exterior and large pieces, confirm the structural design responsibility and the wind criteria for the site. |
