Outdoor pieces are seen from every angle, in every season and in changing light, and they have to sit correctly against planting. Scale, patina and how the piece ages are as important as the form.

Commissioned work in garden & landscape sculpture normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 3–8 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 0+ per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Sculpture Fabrication capability, alongside 13 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.

When garden & landscape sculpture is the right answer - and when it is not

Garden and landscape sculpture is chosen to give an outdoor space a focal point, a pause or a sense of scale, and it is judged in changing conditions - seasons, planting growth, weather and light. It suits private gardens, courtyards, hospitality landscapes and residential schemes. It is a poor fit where the piece cannot be maintained, because garden sculpture is exposed to everything and needs occasional attention to keep looking intentional.

How the work is actually carried out

The piece is designed against the garden's real conditions: the sightline from the principal windows, the level changes, the planting that will grow around it and the season when the garden is most used. Material is selected for the local climate, with drainage and freeze-thaw detailing resolved rather than assumed. The piece is positioned so it is discovered rather than announced, which usually means setting it slightly off the main axis. Lighting is considered, since gardens are often seen most in the evening.

Faults we see most often in garden & landscape sculpture

Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.

  • Choosing the piece before deciding the planting, so the two compete as both mature.
  • Ignoring the sightline from inside the house, where the garden is most often seen from.
  • Selecting a material without considering the local climate, and discovering in the first winter what freeze-thaw does to it.

What to settle before an overseas project starts

Primary sightlinesTell us where the garden is looked at from most - kitchen window, terrace, path. Position follows from that, not from the garden's plan.
Climate and soilExposure, frost and soil chemistry affect both the material and the fixing. Tell us the location and the conditions.
Planting planSend the planting if it exists. Sculpture and planting need to be designed together or one will swallow the other.

Common questions

Which material ages best in a garden?
Bronze and weathering steel age attractively by design; stainless stays as it was; GRC depends entirely on its sealer being renewed. Climate decides which is sensible.
Can the piece be repositioned later?
If a plinth-mounted design is used, yes. We supply lifting points and a fixing detail that allows relocation without damaging the base.
How long does a large sculpture take end to end?
A typical landmark piece runs several weeks to a few months depending on size, material and finishing. Design, maquette approval, fabrication and finishing are each scheduled separately.
